Biography
Born in 1982 in Chicago, Amara Betty Martin is a second generation Puerto Rican photographer and community organizer with Quennect 4 Gallery Chicago.
Her work focuses on urban environments and alternative cultures. Influenced by not only the violence and pace of urban Chicago, but also by the vibrancy, strength and enduring cultural avenues, Martin has explored the urban landscapes and people of her community through an activist’s lens.
Her work is a visual testament to urban architecture, art, culture, landscapes, and artists communities. Her attempts to explore that which inhabits the spaces we move through on a daily basis and the people and things that fill these spaces are an external representation of internal questions for the artist, questions that are universal. The places and people you pass and pass through. These ignored elements are the things that offer beauty to the human experience.
This artist works with both digital and film photographic mediums, with extensive event photography as well as, fine art, fashion, product, and artist collection photography experience. She is currently working on projects that include abstract urban art and underground artist’s communities in Chicago.
"The most important thing I take into consideration when taking a picture is how it makes me feel inside..whether its nervousness, exhilaration, motivation, indignation, adoration, or laughter. I want to cause a reaction in myself as well as the audience."
